Organizing WordCamp Atlanta 2015

In 2011, my WordPress developer friend, Russell Fair and I were asked by WordPress Foundation to organize WordCamp Atlanta. We were targeted, I mean chosen, because we were both active in the local WordPress community hosting Meetup Groups and spoke at other WordCamps.  At first we both resisted thinking, “No way.  We’re way too busy.”   But, after losing our minds we stepped up and took it on.

WordPress founder, Matt Mullenweg came to our first WordCamp Atlanta in 2012. We held it at SCAD that year, and in every picture of me I am wearing my MailChimp Monkey hat. Whatever made me think that was a good idea? Despite that, Matt gave me his American Express Black Card to charge lunch for the 400 attendees. A couple of years ago, a contingent of people from Asheville attended WordCamp Atlanta and thought they would like to have a WordCamp there. We mentored WordCamp Asheville when they were getting up and running and I got to do my first Keynote speech there last year. [Read more…]

Using Technology for Your Company’s Next Event

Keep Calm and Have an Event!Once you have an event planned such as a seminar or an open house, then what? You can use Eventbrite, but if you have a WordPress website, why not keep it all in house? There are a couple of moving parts. Let me go through them with you.

1) Invitation Page: Create an “Invitation Landing Page” for your event on your website, where people can find out the details and register. This is a page that only contains information about the offer without distractions such as sidebars. You will write compelling copy, describing why someone would want to take your seminar and offer testimonials and guarantees (example: ). [Read more…]

WordCamp Atlanta 2013 Coming Soon

Word Camp Warning SignIn a post last week, Seth Godin discussed three concepts – open, generous and connected- that he says people seek from co-workers, bosses or fellow conference attendees.

This week tickets went on sale for WordCamp Atlanta 2013 and, when I read this post, I immediately recognized those characteristics as being descriptive of attendees, speakers, volunteers and organizers of WordCamps.

WordCamps create a setting where people are avidly interested in learning new information that helps them make a difference in their world. Our community is generous with their time and shares their knowledge and experience to [Read more…]

New Tricks Hosting Chris Guillebeau’s $100 Startup Atlanta Book Signing with Tuba

Chris Guillebeau came to the Urban Oasis for his book signing for the new book, The $100 Startup, on May 15th .  We out did  ourselves from last year and that took some doing!

I met Chris Guillebeau on Twitter. Last year, Chris Guillebeau had himself an unconventional book tour for his first book, The Art of Non-Conformity. I reached out to him and told him that the Urban Oasis would be a great location for his Atlanta stop. Chris took me up on the offer and we hosted the event. It was quite an evening with 125 people, a band and lots of fun. Chris sold out of books and a good time was had by all.

Last summer, Chris returned the favor by hosting an amazing conference in his home town of Portland Oregon called the World Domination Summit. There were five hundred of the most fascinating people. There were [Read more…]

WordCamp Atlanta 2012 a Huge Success

Judi Knight and Russell Fair, photo by Jan Stittleburg

Russell Fair and Judi Knight

WordCamp Atlanta 2012 was held at SCAD on February 3-4. It was an amazing event. Russell Fair and I were co-organizers.  Russell is a WordPress Developer I have worked with on  our WordPress Meetup Group. We asked people who we have come to know from Meetup the past year or so, to lead each of the committees and there was a lot of collaboration on all aspects of  this event. Our terrific website was designed and built by committee. One person would do their thing and pass it on to the next to add something to it. This type of teamwork brought us together and we relied upon and built on each others’ strengths.

Badge for WordCamp OrganizerSCAD donated the location and we were so thrilled that they did. Atlanta is a big conference town and facilities book up fast and get top dollar. WordCamps are meant to be accessible to everyone so we have to keep the price of a ticket to about 40.00. We looked high and low for [Read more…]

Interview on Social Media for Transformational Women Radio Show – November 14, 2011

Last week, I was interviewed by Henna Inam, CEO of Transform Leaders and host of her Atlanta Business Radio X radio show, Transformational Women. Henna asked me, along with two other social media women,  Diane Kaufman, Cynthia Rogers, to tell the stories of our companies and how we each have used social media to grow our businesses. Henna  wanted to hear from her panel of entrepreneur, CEO women, what we thought were the top 2-3 social media tools that actually drive business revenue. It was a lively and interesting hour.

Rock Your Business with a WordPress Website

Creative freelancers are passionate about what we do and spend a lot of time making other people’s businesses look great, but sometimes we are not as good about focusing on our own businesses.

It may be that you know what to do and are not doing those things, but with all the new technology and the way the Internet is changing the way people find people to do work for them, it may be that you need to cut through all of the haze and hype, and have someone tell you how all of this technology actually works together to help you powerfully connect with the people seeking your services.

Recently, I have been speaking on this subject a lot and have had a lot of request for my slides and notes from  people who could not attend these events. So by popular demand, I am going one step better with presenting it as a free webinar with the audio and slides available below.

Sarah Robinson To Speak on August 25 at New Tricks World Headquarters

I am so glad to be able to have Sarah Robinson speak at New Tricks on August 25.  Brandon Sutton and I are sponsoring this event and we hope you can come (you can RSVP at the bottom of the page).

Sarah Robinson Photo in front of brick wall You know how when you start a business you struggle to find your place in it?  (It’s kind of silly when you think about it.  After all, it’s YOUR business.)

But, starting a business and making it work for you is a HUGE undertaking and it can be overwhelming.  Getting clients, doing the work, invoicing, getting more clients….If you don’t have a clear definition of what you do and who you serve, you can feel like you’re on a hamster wheel—running in circles but not getting anywhere. You watch other business owners who seem to “have it all together” and know exactly what they’re about and who their market is.  They make it look so easy don’t they?

Here’s the secret to success.  Discover what you’re good at, what makes your heart sing and how you can mesh those into your business.  Easier said than done, I know.

That’s where our friend, Sarah Robinson and her Creating Irresistible Presence  Equation comes in.

Clarity + Confidence + Courage = Cash Flow

You won’t just magically wake up one day and know how to make your business run smoother and be the success you want for it.

You have to work to discover the secret formula trapped within you.   Dig deep to uncover those secrets and bring them into the light.

We all have a powerful Presence that once we tap into it, will ignite our passion, creativity and even bank account in a way we’ve never seen before.

Sound good? [Read more…]

Unleash Your Blog’s Potential and Run with the Big Dogs

Big Dog Series

Dog Print by Walter Salas

I am stepping off the porch and inviting some big dogs to guest post on my site for ten days!  I am inviting you to join me for this free, 10-day blog series, Unleash Your Potential and Run with the Big Dogs, starting June 20, 2011.

Don’t feel like you are a Big Dog yet?  I hope this could be a chance to claim your turf by hearing from some of my favorite big dogs, absolutely free.

I asked eight special Big Dog bloggers,  to write a post for the New Tricks site, on the topic, “Unleash Your Blog’s Potential and Run with the Big Dogs.” The topic has expanded by leaps and bounds since first conceptualizing it and we are going to talk about how to get those leashes off in general and not just on your blog or businesses. It is all connected though, isn’t it?

How Will It Work?

  • You sign up, absolutely free, to receive e-mails from me, a few before and each day of the series. I will send you a special message introducing you to that day’s Big Dog with a link back to my site.
  • The series will start June 20th and run through June 29th. I will write the first post introducing the series on the 20th, have eight guest authors and I will write the last post wrapping up the series.

I Want You to Play Along!

  • I really encourage you to read the posts, each and everyday and be sure to leave a question or comment (this is good training).
  • I will make a Twitter list with all of the Big Dogs and the participants so you can follow each other and have some Twitter support.
  • Each day, the Big Dog of the day, as well as myself, will be sure to respond to each of your comments.

Use these ten days to consider what you can do next that will catapult your life and your online presence to the next level.

I think it is going to be really fun and I am sure looking forward to upping my game in the process. [Read more…]
