Content Marketing: Knowing What to Do Versus Doing What You KnowLast week I sent out a call for help to find out what yours and my other readers’ biggest frustration was with their online marketing. It was great that got a lot of responses and I read every one and even replied to a few. The responses below were fairly representative :

“I don’t do any online marketing and don’t know where to start. ”
“I am overwhelmed with how much there is to do, so I don’t do anything.”
“I want to come up in search engines for my products.”
“I want to get everything just right before I start marketing to new people, so I haven’t started writing posts.”
“I have spent a lot of money on websites and ad words with companies that didn’t do what they said they would do.”
“I do a lot of things but I don’t know what is working.”

So far, it seems that most people do need a better understanding of the parts and pieces that make up a good content marketing strategy, as well as a simple plan that they can carry out. But, generally knowing the information does not necessarily translate into doing it or doing it right, which seems to require a bit more attention and personal support.

In fact, we all need that. Even though I think I know a thing or two, I love getting feedback on my own marketing from people I admire in the industry. Last week, I spent an hour on the phone with Jon Morrow of Boost Blog Traffic and writer/editor for Copyblogger.

One of the things that stood out in our talk that relates to people knowing what to do, but not doing what they know, is that John offers a 100% Money Back Guaranty.  Specifically, Jon’s Guest Blogging program comes with a 100% money back guaranty that you will secure a guest blogging gig by the end of the course. But he has one caveat, you have to do the work. Jon said, “No one has ever asked for their money back.”

It is clear to me why that is. If you follow his plan, there is no way you will not get an A-List blogger to agree for you to write a guest post on their blog. It is a no brainer. But, if you don’t do the work, there is no way you would get a guest blogging gig. Most people in that situation would understand that they didn’t follow the plan, slink off into the sunset and wouldn’t ask for their money back. Some people might blame Jon or the course but still wouldn’t ask for their money back. And others would just get the job done. Which category would you fall in?
